Music in the Library: Scissors for Lefty

Scissors for Lefty band members

Join us for an acoustic performance by Scissors For Lefty. This San Francisco band's style features melodies in between melodies, dance-rock guitar, glittery keyboard, disco bass, and galloping propulsion from a 6'10" drummer -- all fronted by heavy-breathing tales of poignant relationships and counter-culture glow. The Library has begun a pilot to help authors pay article processing charges and other OA publishing fees. The goals of the program are to:

Access Elsevier E-Books Through January

Take advantage of over 1,500 "Evidence-based Selection" e-book titles published by Elsevier between 2007-2012 and available via the Library Catalog. With Evidence-based Selection (EBS), UCSF has unlimited access to the selected titles until January 31, 2013. At that time, the Library will pick which titles to purchase permanently based on the usage throughout the last year. Books not purchased will no longer be accessible.

UCSF Launches Open Online Courses on January 28

On January 28, UCSF will launch its first two MOOCs – Massive Open Online Courses – on the Coursera platform. MOOCs are a way to make select UCSF educational content available to the world, increase visibility as an educational institution, and experiment with new types of teaching and course delivery methods. Coursera, which launched in 2012, has partnered with top-tier universities around the world to help develop and deliver MOOCs.

New: Walkstations Available in Library Tech Commons

The Library recently installed two walking workstations, or Walkstations, in the Tech Commons on the 2nd floor. Combining a height-adjustable work surface and a low-speed treadmill, the Walkstation lets you walk comfortably, burn calories, and feel more energized while working at a computer.

UCSF Faculty: Reserve a Daily Carrel Online

The Library now enables UCSF faculty members to reserve daily carrels online. Located in the Parnassus Campus Library, these individual carrels are designed to facilitate research and to provide a quiet study atmosphere.

Faculty may book a daily carrel in advance through our online reservation system. A maximum of 7 reservations are allowed per month. Additional reservations may be made in person if carrels are available.

Instructional Grants: Letters of Intent Due February 25

Funds are available to support instructional improvement projects focused on interprofessional education, to be initiated during the 2013-2014 academic year. This grant program is funded by the Center for Innovation in Interprofessional Education and the UCSF Library.

Open Access Publishing Vouchers Available for RSC Journals

Royal Society of Chemistry Journals

UCSF scholars can publish open access articles at no cost in Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC) journals during RSC’s 2013 Gold for Gold program. RSC launched this program to help researchers who want to publish their articles open access (OA), but lack funds to pay the OA article processing charge (APC). The Gold for Gold initiative provides all RSC Gold subscribers with voucher codes to make papers available via OA, free of charge.
